Why We Exist
From Ghetto to Greatness strives to create a new heart and mindset in our young adults. Our goal is to teach them that despite their environment and upbringing, they can achieve greatness in any endeavor in life — best achieved through education, whether by pursuing higher education or through self-empowerment and self-employment.
Our Mission: To foster a mentality of excellence and greatness within urban America.
"We must destroy the ghetto mentality afflicting our youth and build a mentality of greatness within urban America."
Financial support that puts higher education within reach for scholars who earn it.
Committed relationships with educators and leaders who walk alongside every student.
Replacing limits with the unshakeable belief that greatness is possible — for every child.
Our Philosophy
The full mission of From Ghetto to Greatness, Inc.
From Ghetto to Greatness, Inc. believes that every child is capable of success. If given the opportunity, every young person can achieve greatness through education. When students attend academically demanding schools, engaging them early in life — from grade school to high school — they can achieve greatness and be successful. With these relevant educational experiences and meaningful relationships with parents and teachers who are committed to their growth and development, they can and will reach their full intellectual, professional, and personal potential.
To this end, From Ghetto to Greatness, Inc. partners with educators and other agencies not only to provide students with financial support, but also with the moral support and encouragement that every student needs and deserves. Our goal is to teach every child that despite their environment and upbringing, they can achieve greatness in any endeavor in life. We must destroy the ghetto mentality afflicting our youth and build a mentality of greatness within urban America.
So let us come together and give financial support to today's scholars for their higher educational goals. From Ghetto to Greatness — empowering young adults through education, and fostering a mentality of excellence.
In the Founder's Words
"Born in the ghetto, scorned in the ghetto, life in the ghetto, strife in the ghetto, tears in the ghetto, jeers in the ghetto — all in the ghetto. Smoke in the ghetto, schemes in the ghetto, dreams in the ghetto. All these things are found in the ghetto, including Greatness. Born in the ghetto, one comes to believe the fallacy that there is nothing good that comes from the ghetto. I beg to differ. I come to tell you that there is Greatness in the ghetto." Today we celebrate the Greatness in our students and young adults who are committed to exercising a mentality of Greatness — putting God first in all that they do.
The road to greatness begins with prayer.
Our Founder
Gilbert J. West's life is the living proof of the mission he built. Born in Harlem, New York in 1954, one of 17 children, Gil grew up understanding firsthand what it means to navigate life from the bottom — and what it takes to rise above it.
After earning his GED through the Opportunities Industrialization Center in the Bronx, Gil did something remarkable: he became the first of his 16 siblings to graduate college, earning a B.A. in English from Iona College in 1980. He went on to earn his law degree from the Antioch School of Law in Washington, D.C., where he worked alongside civic giants — serving as Legislative Aide to D.C. City Council Chair Wilhelmina J. Rolark, volunteering with Donna Brazile on national marches, and coordinating Eleanor Holmes-Norton's successful congressional campaign.
Gilbert came to Orange County in the late 1980s, and in 1991 he met Charlotte — the two have been inseparable ever since. Back in New York, Gil built a distinguished legal career in criminal and civil litigation, served as President of Black Executives of the Mid-Hudson Valley, and earned the NAACP Men of Distinction Award. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Protect the Dream Youth Foundation, founded by Dave Hargett and the late, great Landon Gray — service that ignited the passion in both Gilbert and Charlotte to create something of their own.
From Ghetto to Greatness, Inc. was formed in 2012 by two young adults from the Mid-Hudson Valley — Kyle Resto and Angelo Shorey — together with Gilbert J. West, Sr., their mentor. The founders saw too many gifted and talented young people thrust into a life of mediocrity and shortcomings before they ever reached adulthood, and set out to change that story. Gilbert is a proud father of a son and two daughters and grandfather of three, and he has dedicated his life to proving that where you come from is not where you have to stay.
Support His MissionOur Co-Founder
A native of Newburgh, New York and a graduate of the Newburgh Free Academy, Charlotte has spent her life lifting others up. Her work at Newburgh Community Action and later at Dutchess Community College nurtured a deep desire to help young people — and in the early 2000s, she touched the lives of hundreds of DCC students.
Gilbert and Charlotte met in 1991 and have been inseparable ever since. Together, in 2012, they founded From Ghetto to Greatness, Inc. — a 501(c)(3) organization proud to put 100% of every donation toward scholarships. A former midwife and a most loving wife for life, Charlotte shares with Gilbert a love of travel and a blended family of two sons, two daughters, and seven grandchildren between them.
Their prayer is that their legacy will be measured in lives improved — students supported not only in their own community, but as far-reaching as God will allow — through From Ghetto to Greatness.
